10 Guidelines For Designing Pet Houses

This is a very special article for all the pet parents out there. Just like me, I know you all love your dogs, cats, turtles, parrots and other lovely creatures with you. You feel closer to them than other human beings. So, let us pamper them even more by giving them a special place in our house. Their house within our house!

Making houses for our feathered, scaled or furred friends is always a challenging yet essential task. Even though they can sleep on floor, giving them comfortable beds or enclosures that they can call their own, ensures that they feel loved and secured.

Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind while getting a house designed for your adorable pets.

  • Knowing your pet is very important; its age, health and temperament. The size is the most important characteristic that would help you decide the size for building the pet place.
  • Appropriate light and ventilation should be provided. It also depends on the temperament of your pet, if it likes to look outside or prefers darker, cozy places.
  • Make sure that the entire structure is safe and sturdy. It should withstand the weight and occasional jumping of your cats and dogs.
  • Pay attention on the smaller details. The edges should not be sharp or it may hurt your buddy.
  • Choose pet friendly materials for flooring, like vinyl flooring, ceramic tiles or laminate flooring. Vinyl flooring is durable, water resistant, and is excellent for cushioning noise. Ceramic floor tiles are extremely durable, and are impervious to wetness and humidity. Laminate flooring is great as it is resistant to scratches, staining, and is also easily cleaned (homify.in). If your pet prefers warmth, a carpet would do wonders. Choose low pile rugs, so that their claws do not get stuck in the loops.
  • You can make it a part of the furnishing in your house or utilize the unused spaces in your home, like beneath the staircase or a niche.
  • Grow greens, to give them the natural environment and to bring the feel of outside even in the indoors. This is especially useful when the pets are only taken out once in a week or so. Avoid toxic and artificial plants.
  • You can also think about making it vertical or going a few steps into the floor. For example, a climbing tree for cat or a burrow for tortoise.
  • You can also think about a portable design that you can carry indoors as well as outdoors. Like a cozy cocoon shaped kennel for dogs which can be shifted from one place to another.
  • Don’t forget to put the favorite toys of your pet, so that they can identify their own space in the beginning!

Pet-centric architecture is becoming a trend. To understand the pets, their needs and making a comfortable shelter for them is a way of showing affection to them. You can make it contemporary or futuristic, beautiful and eco-friendly. It would be good for both the pets and their owners, to give each other the space required. Now be a responsible pet parent and start designing the houses for your little munchkins!
