Window Treatments 101: Wall To Wall Draperies- Their Form, Function, And Beauty In Home Design

When selecting window treatments for a space, the most important thing to consider is of course the windows! We know this might seem obvious but trust us, some people forget the windows are the starting point and will give you the best inspiration. Some windows that just want Roman Shades while other windows are begging for drapes. While this can be partially attributed to conventions since certain rooms traditionally have had drapes; bedrooms, dining rooms, and often living rooms, but consider the mood you are trying to set as you study your windows and layout. Mood is an often overlooked aspect of interior design (much more on that later).

One of our favorite trends and tendencias for the coming years is wall to wall draperies. I have been calling our new trend blogs 2023 - 2024 but my business partner, Aneka, says that I tend to be closer to 4 years ahead of widespread trend adoption. Luckily, I have zero issues with getting strange looks for my clothing, and I live in Mexico now. As an expat/immigrant, I’m expected to be different. A luxury that is used to its full advantage every single day (also, more on that later).

Now back to the trend we’re highlighting today! Wall to wall draperies have such a wonderful sense of drama and impact that they can immediately set the mood of a space. An entire wall or room covered in draped fabric will soften the space. A drapery wall also creates a sense of luxury and richness and btw, if you can’t be rich, at least you can feel rich! Oddly enough, I swear that is the first step to becoming wealthy. Fake it til you make it! I genuinely believe that intentional energy does lead so many things into fruition.

On a different note, wall to wall curtains can also do some heavy lifting in the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ department. I happen to know that one of the photos in this blog is hiding an unfortunately placed window. I know, because the designer told me! Side note for all you architects and contractors: a bit of common sense goes a long way in planning rooms. Nobody wants a weird window behind their bed.

One final note on wall to wall curtains: If you (like me) love the aesthetic of inverted pleats, this is one of the best opportunities for them. I’ve long been a devotee of inverted pleats, but we made a tough call to remove custom inverted pleat draperies from our main offerings because they DO NOT function. So if you love the look of inverted pleats, here’s your chance since most wall to wall coverings feature stationary drapery. If you’re looking for these, please contact us directly as these custom drapes because they are not available through our online listings in our Custom Drapery Store. Remember we have a 2-3 week lead time on custom drapery panels if the linen is in stock. Add about a week for production if we need to import linen from our warehouse in LA,  or an additional 2-3 weeks if you custom order our Irish linen draperies that are not currently in stock. Somehow we just work a lot faster in Guadalajara.

That’s the quick and dirty Window Treatments 101: Wall to Wall Draperies (Forrest style). I never thought I would be the drapery dude, but here I am. 43 years old and still one of the youngest custom drapery manufactures that I know of. Large scale manufactures anyway. Grant Trick in Birmingham, AL is probably about my age, and Jennifer Armstrong Howell in Auburn, AL is definitely younger than me. This is also one of the main reasons I’ve moved the majority of our production to Mexico. We just couldn’t find the sewers in the States. Which is also the reason why our lead times and nothing like the current 15-18 weeks in Northern California. Don’t worry. I’m down here making sure our draperies are the same luxury quality as we produced in the US.

We aren’t just in California anymore. We fabricate and ship custom linen and COM drapes to the entire United States.
