How To Design A Wardrobe Like A Professional Designer

Wardrobe is as much inside as its exterior. More than the aesthetic and style of wardrobe which complements your space, its internal planning is more important. Its functionality revolves around a combination of drawers, hanger space and shelves. A good layout makes space for storage and as a result the wardrobe becomes clutter-free.

These wardrobes have hinged doors for its closing mechanism. The depth is usually 22-24 inches as the doors are attached to the vertical partitions and does not take much space. The height is about the lintel level and often, cabinets are provided for additional storage which extends up to the ceiling. The width of door is approximately 24 inches so that there isn’t much load on the hinges.

The doors of these wardrobes slide open on either side. It comprises of a system of tracks and rollers. The depth of it is 26 inches, comparatively more, as the channels are installed on top and bottom of horizontal planes. The width of the wardrobes should at least be 84 inches such that it can have minimum 2 sliders of its half. Each door should not exceed 48 inches otherwise it would weigh heavy. 

Slider doors are preferred over the hinged to save the space occupied by the doors when opened outward.

The sizes of men’s apparels are different than those of women. The internal space division depends on it. The height for hanging shirts should be about 40 inches alongside keeping 3 inches between the hanging rod and the top. A shelf for blazers and other similar pieces of clothing should have 28-30 inches of depth.

From bikinis to flowy gowns, a lady must have it all! The wide range of women’s clothing line makes it difficult to compartmentalize a wardrobe. Smaller hanging sections for sarees or shirts can be 40 inches in height whereas for kurta or gowns, it should be as much as 66-72 inches. 

Some common features for gender-based wardrobes. 
A shelf for folded clothes can be included in both these types of wardrobes which should be approximately 15inches. 

  • The height of drawers ranges from 4-8 inches for easy use and accessibility. 
  • The shoe shelves can be 6-8 inches high for shoes and heels. To store thigh high boots, 18 inches of height is ergonomic. The depth of shoe shelves is generally 15 inches.
